FAQs
Burial at Sea
Are there any special permits needed for burial at sea?
Yes. The EPA may issue a general permit under the Marine Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act (MPRSA) to authorize sea burials. Additionally, special permits may be required depending on your state.
In California, all burials at sea conducted off the coast require a permit issued by the County. This applies to both full-body burials and the scattering of cremated remains at sea. What materials do you use for water burials?
For full-body burial at sea services, we provide caskets, coffins, and shrouds as body containers. All materials we use are biodegradable and environmentally friendly. We don't use plastic in our coffins, as it isn't decomposable.
When you choose our ash scattering services, we offer biodegradable urns and baskets. If you'd like flowers placed at the burial site, we use only decomposable flowers. Is it allowed to bury animals cremated remains?
No. The MPRSA general permit permits only the burial of human remains at sea. Pet ashes can't be mixed with human ashes. The remains must not cause pollution or create marine debris. Can we incorporate ashes into artificial reefs or monuments?
No. Cremated remains must be placed only in simple decomposable containers such as biodegradable cremation urns. Any other structure serving a purpose beyond disposal isn't permitted. Can we scatter ashes at a lake, river, or bay?
No. The MPRSA general permit authorizes sea burials only in ocean waters. All sea burials must be conducted at least three nautical miles from shore. How to find a boat to carry the cremation ashes?
You can use your own authorized boat or hire one from charter companies. Many charter boats provide burial at sea services and employ specialized operators for these ceremonies. Why choose a sea burial?
Sea burials offer several advantages over traditional ground burials. They're more environmentally friendly and don't cause soil contamination. The materials used are biodegradable and decompose quickly.
Sea funerals also require less time to arrange, and the costs are typically more affordable than ground burials. What do you offer for memorial service?
Our boat captain and funeral director will recite a reading, poem, or prayer before conducting the casketed burial or scattering the ashes at sea. We provide funeral music, though we're happy to play music of your choice. Additional services can be included upon request.Where in California do you provide sea burial services?
